Subject: Recognition of Yucaipa High School for Participation in the 2014 Inland
Solar Challenge
Recommendation: That the Board of Directors presents the Yucaipa High School Team with
a trophy for their First Place finish in the competition.
Students and teachers from Yucaipa High School competed in the sixth annual Inland Solar
Challenge in May 2014 at Yucaipa Regional Park. The students from Yucaipa High School
worked all year constructing a solar powered boat using specific materials such as an electric
motor, drive shaft components, propeller and batteries. The Yucaipa Valley Water District is a
proud sponsor of Yucaipa High School each year and provides financial support associated with
the construction of the solar powered boat.
After months of planning, designing and building a solar powered boat, the students from Yucaipa
High School competed against six other local high school teams in a series of events designed to
test the speed, endurance and performance of their boat as well as their knowledge of water
related issues.
This year Yucaipa High School won first place in the Inland Solar Challenge event. The District
is extremely proud of their accomplishment and would like to recognize the students and teachers
with an Outstanding Achievement Award from the District.
The Yucaipa Valley Water District looks forward to sponsoring the high school again next year.
